The real reason that schools do not make significant gains is that they work hard at too many separate things. Spending more focused time planning fewer independent projects will help increase effectiveness by allowing faculty an opportunity connect learning. Think of the number of projects and initiatives that the average school engages in per academic year. Many of these projects have overlapping objectives or themes but are initiated by different departments or grade levels and implemented at different times throughout the school year. Contemplate how much more effective the “reading” program would be if it incorporated the “science fair project;” was linked to the ‘mock writing test’ and/or connected to fall/spring sports. Consider reducing the number of separated instructional projects and initiatives by linking them to create more interdisciplinary projects.
