Benefits to Teaching Abroad

There are many benefits for one whom is considering teaching abroad including competitive salaries and inter-cultural engagement. The highest paid places for international teachers are the Gulf Arab States (UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia), Japan, South Korea and China. Many of the for mentioned countries offer accommodation allowances, flight allowances and comprehensive health insurance. In addition to receiving international training and learning strategies to support ESL students, teachers may have opportunities to learn the native language of the country they are working in and engage in regional/international travel.

If one is compelled to become an international teacher it is important to do research on the country of interest. Many countries require various levels of education and experience. For instance, in South Korea teachers are encouraged to obtain a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate while the years of experience required is none, whereas the United Arab Emirates has no TEFL certificate requirement but teachers need a minimum of two years’ experience as a certified teacher. With proper research and planning international teaching can be a beneficial endeavor for educators with a passion for adventure.
