TEACH students appropriate responses to cultural diversity

“As more teachers from the United States are recruited to teach abroad in China, Hawaii, United Arab Emirates (UAE), teachers are placed in educational settings where their ability to adapt to cultural diversity may be more important than their teaching abilities.”

TEACH students appropriate responses to cultural diversity

Teaching with diversity and cultural competency in mind implies that teachers recognize that there is injustice in society and that not all students are treated or educated equally in our schools. Teachers should work toward understanding the differences that exist and use the student’ unique characteristics to make learning connections. Demonstrate behaviors, attitudes, policies, and structures that encourage and embrace cross-cultural understanding

1. Be honest, be open

2. Visit student communities and places of worship

3. Validate student’s cultural identity with affirming books, articles, and movies

4. Invite the culture into the classroom/school
