How do we integrate literacy in the science classroom?

Students’ ability to read, write and comprehend scientific concepts ultimately affect their ability to excel in science related content areas. Science is not a subject in which information can merely be memorized, students must have a plethora of knowledge from multiple sources to truly excel in this discipline. The LaVoulle Group suggests that teachers use class time to merge skills used in other content areas to increase student progress in science literacy.

Scientific Vocabulary

Focus on increasing students' scientific vocabulary. Many of the terms that appear in science books and journal articles are unfamiliar to students because they are not used in everyday conversation, therefore teachers should explicitly teach scientific vocabulary. For example, teachers can include vocabulary strategies such as the integration of graphic organizers, the use of word banks and lists, and the encouragement classifying and sequencing vocabulary terms.
